Kyrgyz Ambassador Recalled Over Border Clash With Tajikistan

Kyrgyzstan has recalled its ambassador toTajikistan followinga border skirmish onSaturday, Kyrgyz media reported Tuesday.

The Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry said the ambassador was returning todiscuss the matter withKyrgyz officials, according tonews agency K-News.

Five Kyrgyz and three Tajik border guards were seriously injured inthe clash, duringwhich Tajik soldiers fired mortar rounds, Kyrgyz media reported.

Kyrgyz and Tajik authorities agreed onMonday towithdraw military and guard units fromborder settlements afterdeciding tojointly patrol the areas just a week ago.

Kyrgyzstan closed its border crossings withTajikistan followingthe attack, although a Kyrgyz official said Monday that travelers fromthird nations could still pass unhindered.

The borders betweenKyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in the densely populated Fergana Valley have been contested sincethe collapse of the Soviet Union in1991. More thana third ofthe Tajik-Kyrgyz border remains disputed.
