Amur Launch Facility to Be Built

The Federal Space Agency plans to build a launch complex for the Amur rocket at the Vostochny Cosmodrome, the agency said, Interfax reported.

Officials said that in 2012, the agency built a part of the facility infrastructure and set up a department in charge of the spaceport.

Construction of the Vostochny facility began in 2011 and is slated to cost 160 billion rubles ($5.3 billion). The first launch is scheduled for 2015.

Completion of the second stage and the first launch of a manned spacecraft are slated for 2018.

Vostochny is expected to replace the Baikonur Cosmodrome, which Russia leases from Kazakhstan, as the country's primary space launch facility.
