Duma Passes Citizenship Bills in First Reading

TheState Duma onTuesday passed two bills in their first reading that would simplify theprocedure forobtaining Russian citizenship.

Thefirst bill would make it easier tobecome aRussian citizen forchildren who live abroad andhave aparent who is aRussian citizen, Interfax reported. Thebill would not require thesecond parent toprovide consent forthe child's Russian citizenship, Duma Speaker Sergei Naryshkin said.

Theother bill would streamline theprocedure forgetting aRussian passport forpeople who join theprogram forthe repatriation ofRussians andtheir families, Naryshkin said. If thelegislation is passed, it would drop thecurrent residency requirement offive years spent inRussia, as well as theresidence permit, confirmation ofa legitimate source ofincome andpassage ofa language exam.
