Plane Crashes in Kamchatka, Killing 10

AnAn-28 propeller plane carrying 14 people crashed inthe far eastern region ofKamchatka onTuesday, killing 10 ofthose onboard.

Air traffic controllers lost contact with theplane traveling fromthe regional capital Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky tothe town ofPalana on thepeninsula's northwest coast around 12:30 p.m. local time, astatement onthe Kamchatka regional administration's website said.

AMi-8 helicopter was sent insearch ofthe plane, which was run by the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Airline, andfound it about 10 kilometers fromPalana, thestatement said.

Four people survived the crash, thestatement said andInterfax reported. Thursday has been declared a day of mourning in Kamchatka.

Astatement bythe Investigative Committee cited anumber ofpossible reasons forthe crash, including poor weather conditions, atechnical failure inthe plane, andpilot error. Thestatement said aninvestigation intothe crash is under way.

The crash was the deadliest in Russia since a Utair-operated ATR 72 crashed just after takeoff in the Siberian city of Tyumen in April, killing 33 people. In May, a Sukhoi-built Superjet 100 collided with a mountain in Indonesia, killing all 45 people on board.

Thefour survivors of Tuesday's crash, among whom was a13-year-old, two women anda man, are incritical condition ina Palana hospital with avariety ofbroken bones andother injuries, theKamchatka administration statement said. The13-year-old is ina coma andis inthe worst condition ofthe four survivors, it said.

Most of the passengers were residents of Palana, a Kamchatka emergency official told Interfax. Palana has a population of about 3,500 people, according to the 2010 census.

AKamchatka region air traffic control source told Interfax that one possible reason forthe crash being considered byinvestigators is engine failure inthe plane. Thesource also said there was bad weather near Palana atthe time ofthe crash, including torrential rains andclouds as low as 400 meters fromthe ground.
