Opposition Could Propose United Candidate for Ryazan Governorship

AJust Russia andthe Communist Party are holding talks over backing ajoint candidate forgubernatorial elections tobe held inthe Ryazan region inOctober, anews report said Wednesday.

Just Russia considers thebest candidate forthe role to be State Duma Deputy Dmitry Gudkov, akey organizer ofthe ongoing protest movement against President Vladimir Putin's rule, while theCommunists are leaning toward regional party secretary Vladimir Fedotkin, according toIzvestia.

Fedotkin told thenewspaper that he was willing tothrow his weight behind another candidate if it made anopposition victory more likely.

"We are willing tosupport another candidate. We need aresult. No one wants tosimply wave aflag," Fedotkin said, adding that talks had also taken place with theLiberal Democratic Party but that no decision had yet been made.

Asource inA Just Russia later confirmed toIzvestia that "very active" discussions were being held with Communists onthe highest level.

The source argued that one factor inGudkov's favor was that, "if thebet is placed onhim, then aMoscow landing party will arrive inthe region, anda campaign will take place ona federal level.”

Rostislav Turovsky, ananalyst with theCenter forPolitical Technologies, told the daily that theRyazan governor's post is up forgrabs, as acting Governor Oleg Kovalyov's position is weak.

Kovalyov recently resigned fromhis post but remained as acting governor andpromised torun forre-election inthe fall.

A report by the influential Petersburg Center think tank published in March suggests that United Russia member Kovalyov could struggle in a popular vote, giving him only 2 points out of 5 on a political survival scale.
