MTS Troubled in Uzbekistan

Mobile TeleSystems' subsidiary in Uzbekistan, Uzdunrobita, on Saturday temporarily shut down some of its equipment as requested by the Uzbek State Communications Inspectorate, Interfax reported Monday.

A total of 208 base stations were shut off, which could lead to "some deterioration and disruption to mobile phone services," MTS-Uzbekistan said on its website.

The Uzbek State Communications Inspectorate said Saturday that it had discovered new violations by Uzdunrobita. The agency believes that "fiber-optic communication lines laid through the conduit running between switching stations are operated without proper commissioning of the acceptance committee."
