Krymsk Officials Detained Over Flood Deaths workers clearing up in the Krymsk district after flash flooding swept through the Krasnodar region.

Police detained three officials inthe Krasnodar region over theweekend, accusing them ofnegligence after flooding killed 171 people inearly July.

Krymsk Mayor Vladimir Ulanovsky, former head ofthe Krymsk district Vasily Krutko andViktor Zhdanov, acting head ofthe district's emergency warning department, face up toseven years inprison anda ban onholding official positions for three years if tried and convicted of the charges, investigators said ina statement Sunday.

Authorities fired Krutko as district head afew days after torrential rain caused theworst flash flooding tohit theregion in 70 years. An estimated 153 people died in Krymsk and the surrounding district alone.

Voters elected Ulanovsky as Krymsk mayor onMay 13, when he garnered almost 95 percent ofthe vote as theUnited Russia candidate.
