Guard Who Helped Love-Stricken Prisoner to Face Charges

A female employee of a Tula prison is herself now facing up to four years in jail for helping a prisoner who fell in love with her.

Investigators say the woman "entered into non-work-related contact" with a local resident held under detention, who confessed his love and promised to marry her after his release, Interfax reported.

The man asked the employee to bring him prohibited items and gave her money. The woman said she felt sympathy for the prisoner and later "fell into financial dependence" and could not refuse his requests.

The woman, a junior inspector in the prison security department, faces charges of abuse of office against the interests of the service.

Investigators said the woman's actions "discredit the activities of the institution and agencies responsible for criminal punishment, undermine the authority of the government and violate the principle of isolating a detained citizen from society."
