2 Killed in Military Chopper Accident

A Ka-52 military attack helicopter crashed during a training flight in the Tver region, killing the aircraft's navigator and pilot, a Defense Ministry official told Interfax on Tuesday.

The two-seat helicopter had been on a flight Monday night when radio signal with the crew was lost, Defense Ministry spokesman Vladimir Drik said.

The remnants of the aircraft were found Tuesday morning near the town of Bolshaya Kislenka, about 10 kilometers away from the Tozhok airbase.

No one on the ground was injured and no structures were damaged, Drik said.

An unnamed source familiar with the situation told Interfax that inclement weather could have resulted in poor visibility during the flight.

The Ka-52 is one of the most modern aircraft in Russia's arsenal and is designed to destroy tanks, perform terrain reconnaissance and engage in aerial combat.

Military prosecutors have opened an investigation.
