Snowstorm Disrupts Transportation in Moscow

Another snowstorm that hit Moscow overnight caused heavy traffic jams Tuesday morning, while Moscow airports struggled to avoid major delays.

Heavy snow on roads accumulated overnight, and a slew of minor accidents brought city traffic to a virtual standstill in the early hours.

Vnukovo Airport temporarily shut down Tuesday morning due to heavy snowfall but later resumed normal operations. Domodedovo Airport had at least four canceled flights, and Sheremetyevo had at least nine.

The snowfall is expected to continue in the city through Wednesday.

Analysts warn that the traffic situation could deteriorate, with the capital expected to receive up to a quarter of its monthly precipitation by Wednesday, according to state-run news agency RIA-Novosti.

Meanwhile, in the Tver region, reports surfaced on Tuesday morning that a new traffic jam was building up on the M10 highway, which connects Moscow to St. Petersburg through Tver and Veliky Novgorod.

The major artery, packed with trucks transporting goods, experienced a 70-kilometer standstill over the weekend due to heavy snowfall. More snow fell on the highway on Tuesday.

While traffic was light on the road in the morning, later in the day regional emergency officials said there was a high possibility of more traffic jams and advised drivers to avoid the route, RIA-Novosti reported.
