Pussy Riot Appeal Postponed

Moscow City Court postponed a hearing for an appeal of a lower court ruling that declared the videos of punk band Pussy Riot extremist — meaning the footage remains freely available online.

The court said Monday that the hearing will be assigned only after Dec. 29 because the appeal deadline is still running, the Rapsi legal news agency reported, citing an undisclosed court representative. The report did not say when the deadline expires.

The appeal was filed by Pussy Riot member Yekaterina Samutsevich after a district court on Nov. 29 ruled that the band’s videos were extremist, including footage of the famous February performance in Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral.

Samutsevich was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment for taking part in the performance, but she was later acquitted.

The Pussy Riot videos were originally posted on the band’s LiveJournal blog, where they remain available to users in Russia to this day.
