FSB Says It Foiled 92 Terrorist Attacks in 2012

The Federal Security Service has prevented 92 terrorism-related crimes this year, FSB head Alexander Bortnikov told reporters on Tuesday.

The FSB also "foiled the activity of several odious leaders organizing terrorist acts," Bortnikov said,  RIA-Novosti reported without providing details of the crimes the security services had foiled.

Viktor Orlov, deputy head of the National Anti-Terrorist Committee, said earlier that the security services had prevented more than 260 terrorist attacks since the beginning of 2012, RIA-Novosti reported.

Orlov said the number of registered terrorism-related crimes declined from 779 in 2010 to 365 the following year.

Bortnikov attributed the trend to the work of special commissions set up in the North Caucasus that help former militants return to a peaceful life.
