Muslims Say Some Stavropol Schools Ban Hijab

A dispute over what children can wear topublic schools has erupted inthe Stavropol region after schoolgirls with hijabs were prevented fromattending classes.

Local Muslim clerics said several schools inthe region, which has asizable Muslim population, have barred Muslim girls fromattending classes with aheadscarf, while thegirls' parents have refused tolet their children go toschool with uncovered heads, Interfax reported Monday.

Thesituation has deteriorated intoa stalemate because neither side is willing togive any concessions. This inturn has led toa fear among parents that their children will fall behind because their families do not possess themeans forhome-schooling.

Theregion's top Muslim cleric, Haji Muhammad Rakhimov, said he had received apetition fromparents that said five girls fromthe region's Neftekumsk district have been barred fromschool since Oct. 3. He said thecomplaint was thesixth he has received regarding religious clothing inpublic schools.

Asimilar situation was reported Monday byIzvestia, which said hijab-wearing schoolchildren fromthe village ofKara-Tyube, also inStavropol, were prevented fromattending classes.

Local education officials andregional prosecutors have yet tocomment ofthe situation.
