Drunk Driver Hits Transneft Chief's Son-in-Law

A 21-year-old student has been arrested inconnection with aweekend crash that maimed theson-in-law ofTransneft president Nikolai Tokarev.

Kristina Asafova, apparently intoxicated, was driving aMercedes sedan onKutuzovsky Prospekt away fromthe city center around noon Saturday when she struck aBMW motorcycle driven byTokarev’s son-in-law, Andrei Bolotov, investigators said.

Her car then veered intothe oncoming lane andhit two other vehicles.

Bolotov, who until March had served as avice president atstate-owned VTB, was hospitalized incritical condition, andhis right leg had tobe amputated, investigators said.

Asecond person, thedriver ofone ofthe cars that Asafova hit, was also hospitalized with suspected chest injuries.

Eyewitnesses said theinitial collision was caused byAsafova in her attempt tocross several lanes, Interfax reported.

Aninitial police test showed thealcohol content inAsafova’s blood tobe 3 parts per million, which corresponds toa bottle ofhard liquor, Interfax said.

Her lawyer later contested that result, however.

Asafova, who turned herself in toauthorities voluntarily, apologized before reporters atthe court andacknowledged that she had drunk alcohol prior tothe trip.

If convicted ofreckless drunk driving, Asafova faces up tofour years inprison.
