Poland Backs Tymoshenko

KIEV — Poland's president is urging Ukraine to release former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko from jail, if it wants to continue integration with the European Union.

Tymoshenko was convicted to seven years in prison last month on charges of abuse of office in a case that the United States and the EU have condemned as politically motivated.

On a visit to Kiev on Monday, Bronislaw Komorowski said Tymoshenko's imprisonment will continue to harm Ukraine's prospects of concluding a landmark association agreement with the EU. He urged Ukraine to adopt legal changes that would turn Tymoshenko into a nonfelon and allow her release.

President Viktor Yanukovych vowed that Tymoshenko, who has been suffering from severe back pain in prison, will be given access to "European"-style medical help and treatment.
