Power Consumption Rises

Russian electricity consumption may increase 2 percent this year and keep rising through 2016, as the economy starts to recover from the worst contraction on record last year, the Energy Ministry said Thursday.

The country may generate 961.7 billion kilowatt-hours this year, up from 942.8 billion kilowatt-hours in 2009, the ministry said. Consumption is estimated to rise an average 2.9 percent annually for the next six years, the ministry said. Power consumption fell last year.

Installed capacity of Russian power plants will rise by 17 percent to 247.7 million kilowatt-hours, the ministry said.
