5 Acquitted in Murder

The Supreme Court has upheld the acquittal of five suspects in the case of Zelenograd deputy prefect Leonid Oblonsky, who was killed in 2001 in an apparent contract hit, Kommersant reported Thursday.

Prosecutors had accused two local businessmen of hiring hitmen to kill Oblonsky, who wanted to replace a private market run by the businessmen with a municipally owned one. Zelenograd is a district of Moscow.

The suspects were acquitted by juries at three trials, but the Supreme Court threw out the rulings twice before upholding the acquittal Wednesday. Oblonsky’s killing remains unsolved.
