‘Slackers’ Tag Seen as Insult

Calling deputies who skip State Duma meetings “slackers” shows “disrespect” for a state body, Yury Shuvalov, head of the Duma’s public and media relations department, said Thursday.

Deputies were widely criticized for ignoring their duties after a May television report showed the Duma successfully passing a bill despite only 88 of 450 deputies being in attendance.

“What does ‘slacking’ mean at all? A deputy does a lot of work besides attending meetings,” Shuvalov said, Interfax reported.

Shuvalov accused the media of initiating a campaign to damage the Duma’s reputation. But he also admitted that the situation in the Duma had “reached the point of absurdity.”
