Plan to Fight Killer Asteroids

A Russian proposal to protect the Earth from comets and killer asteroids will be considered by the European Commission on July 7, Federal Space Agency chief Anatoly Perminov said Thursday.

The anti-asteroid project is to be developed jointly by Russia, the EU and the European Space Agency, Perminov said, Interfax reported. He did not elaborate on the proposed means to ensure planetary safety.

A total of 6,960 comets and asteroids whose orbits are nearing Earth were registered in April. The figure includes 806 objects more than one kilometer in diameter that have the potential to cause a global catastrophe, and 6,070 hundred-meter asteroids, which can cause a regional catastrophe, Interfax said.
