First Cholera Case Since ’97

A 29-year-old Russian woman and her 10-month-old child who came to Moscow from India have been hospitalized with cholera, Interfax reported Thursday.

The unidentified woman spent the last three years abroad and came to Russia on Monday to visit her former husband. She was hospitalized hours after landing and is in serious condition, Interfax said. She and the child are expected to survive.

Isolated cases of cholera, imported from India, China and the Middle East, are registered in Russia every year, but the last case of an infection in Moscow dates back to 1997, said Gennady Onishchenko, Russia’s chief sanitary doctor.
