Probe Opened on Bribes

The Interior Ministry’s internal security department began an investigation into possible bribes taken by officials from Daimler in exchange for purchase orders for their automobiles.

Oleg Yelnikov, a ministry spokesman, said the check began at the start of April and concerns only the purchases of those cars by the Interior Ministry.

On April 1, a U.S. court fined Daimler $185 million for giving bribes in 22 countries, including Russia. According to documents published by the court, 5 million euros ($6.7 million) of kickbacks was received by officials from the Special Purpose Garage, the Interior Ministry, the Defense Ministry and the mayor’s offices of Moscow, Ufa and Novy Urengoi.
