Ex-Audit Chamber Official Held in Rape Case

Moscow police detained on Wednesday a former Audit Chamber official on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman with his twin brother, an aide in the State Duma, Interfax reported.

The former official, Ilya Vakhonin, 30, was a state auditor when the alleged attack occurred in 2007.

Investigators accused Vakhonin, his younger brother Anton Vakhonin and the director of a Moscow law firm, Vyachaslav Gerasimovich, of sexually assaulting and beating the woman in a Moscow apartment in June 2007.

Moscow's Presnensky District Court convicted Anton Vakhonin, who worked as an aide to the Duma's Natural Resources Committee, of sexual assault last week and sentenced him to eight years in prison.

But investigators' efforts to detain the elder Vakhonin were thwarted after he was set free under a written pledge not to leave the city. Vakhonin disappeared, and a national arrest warrant was issued.

Police detained him in south-central Moscow early Wednesday, Interfax said.

Gerasimovich remains at large.
