City Hall Asks Daimler to 'Clarify' Bribes Claim

City Hall on Thursday said it would ask Daimler to “clarify the situation” regarding bribes that the German company allegedly gave to the Moscow city government to obtain sales contracts for its Mercedes vehicles.

Moscow owns no Mercedes sedans, Sergei Tsoi, Mayor Yury Luzhkov's press secretary, wrote in a letter to Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche.

Tsoi said City Hall considered the allegations “incorrect” and requested that Daimler either give proof that Moscow officials were involved in corruption or refute the accusations.

Daimler should react swiftly to avoid legal action, the letter said, Interfax reported.

In April, Daimler pleaded guilty in the United States to giving kickbacks totaling 5 million euros ($6.6 million) to Russian officials, including from City Hall, the Interior Ministry and the Defense Ministry, the Special Purpose Garage and the cities of Ufa and Novy Urengoi.

The U.S. Justice Department accused Daimler of making cash payments to Dorinvest, a firm controlled by the city, to purchase Mercedes-made Unimog all-wheel-drive trucks.
