Son of Kazakh President Snaps Up British Country Estate

Timur Kulibayev, the son-in-law of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, bought a house near London from Prince Andrew in 2007 for £3 million ($4.7 million) above the £12 million asking price, the Sunday Times said.

Kulibayev, whose fortune was estimated at £1.7 billion in 2008 by Forbes magazine, bought the Sunninghill Park house, a wedding present from Queen Elizabeth II to the Duke and Duchess of York, through “companies that are legally owned” by him, the newspaper said, citing Kulibayev’s solicitors, Magwells.

Prince Andrew visited Kazakhstan officially in 2003, 2006 and 2007, the Sunday Times reported, citing an unidentified spokeswoman. He also made “private” trips to the country in the past few years, the newspaper said, without saying where it got the information. Kulibayev said he had met the prince “several times” since the Sunninghill purchase, the newspaper reported.

Kulibayev is deputy chief executive officer of Kazakhstan’s National Wellbeing Fund Samruk-Kazyna.
