January Beer Output Falls

Russian beer production slumped in January as buyers reduced inventory in anticipation of weaker demand following an increase in the beer excise tax, the State Statistics Service said Monday.

Production declined 44 percent compared with January 2008, after an 11 percent increase in December, the service said. The figures referred to so-called light beer only. Shares of Carlsberg, the country’s largest brewer, fell as much as 2.6 percent after the report.
