No Ban on Terror Coverage

The State Duma will not ban the media from informing the public about the details of terrorist attacks, including how they were organized, reported Tuesday.

The ban was proposed by the Federal Security Service, which introduced amendments on state secrets to the Duma in the spring.

But the Duma’s Security Committee said it would not support the proposal, which critics had complained would effectively prevent the media from reporting on activities of terrorists, who often collaborate with corrupt officials.

The committee, however, supported classifying information about the protection of “strategic” infrastructure and the financial monitoring of terrorist suspects.

The committee’s recommendations will be considered when the Duma reviews the draft for a second hearing, a date for which has not been set.
