Payless Shoe Chain Plans Stores

Shoe seller Collective Brands on Tuesday announced its plans to expand into Russia, opening a network of Payless ShoesSource stores.

Collective Brands said it expected to start opening new Payless stores in 2010, together with its franchise partner Alshaya, according to a press release published Tuesday on its web site.

About five shops will open in Russia late next year, while Kuwait-based Alshaya said it expected a minimum of 90 shops to be opened throughout the country over the next five years and at least 300 outlets in the long term.

“Like many people across the globe, Russian people love to shop and have a strong appetite for fashion and footwear and accessories,” said Matthew Rubel, chief executive of Collective Brands.

“Together we are truly excited to bring the Payless brand to Russia and to affordably serve the footwear and accessory needs of families in the country,” he said.

No further details on the deal were disclosed.

The company, based in Topeka, Kansas, known for selling discounted shoes by top fashion designers, operates more than 4,500 stores in North and Central America, the Caribbean, South America and the Middle East.
