Parents Kill 1,914 Children

About 161,000 Russian children suffered last year from violence on the part of their parents or foster parents, and 1,914 died, new children’s ombudsman Alexei Golovan said Monday.

Golovan, speaking at a news conference, said parents inflicted serious injuries on 2,300 children last year, Interfax reported.

The figures promise to draw criticism from advocates of Russian adoptions by foreigners, who have complained about Russia’s decision to sharply restrict international adoptions after about a dozen Russian children died at the hands of their adoptive U.S. parents over a period of about a decade.

Golovan said he would make efforts to end violence against children a priority for his office.

President Dmitry Medvedev appointed Golovan, a former children’s ombudsman for Moscow, as federal children’s ombudsman, a new post, on Sept. 1.
