New Moldovan Premier

CHISINAU, Moldova — Acting Moldovan President Mihai Ghimpu nominated Western-leaning party leader Vlad Filat as prime minister on Thursday, a step toward resolving a month of political stalemate.

He named Filat, a 40-year-old businessman and leader of the Liberal Democrats, after the Constitutional Court threw out a procedural challenge by the Communists and confirmed Ghimpu as acting president.

In a sign of Moldova's future direction, Ghimpu also said Romanians could travel visa-free to Moldova, overturning a decision to impose visas after rioting in Chisinau in April.
