Moldova to Press Russia

CHISINAU, Moldova — Moldova’s new Western-leaning leadership, in an early challenge to Moscow, said Thursday that it would press Russia to withdraw its soldiers from its breakaway Transdnestr region.

Parliamentary Speaker and acting President Mihai Ghimpu said he would raise the issue at talks next month with President Dmitry Medvedev.

“I hope we will manage to touch on this issue during the summit of heads of state of the Commonwealth of Independent States on Oct. 8 and 9 in Chisinau,” he told reporters after meeting Kremlin chief of staff Sergei Naryshkin in Chisinau.
