Glitch Delays Launch of GLONASS Satellites

The country's space agency delayed launching three satellites aimed at bolstering its planned GPS-type navigation system because of a malfunction with a satellite launched earlier, news agencies reported Friday.

The statement from Russian space agency chief Anatoly Perminov signals yet more problems for the GLONASS project.

Perminov said Friday that a previously launched satellite of the same type suffered a technical problem, news agencies reported. He said experts need time to figure what it is before launching more satellites.

The GLONASS project is ultimately supposed to have 24 satellites available worldwide to compete with the U.S.-based Global Positioning System, but the effort has faced repeated technical problems and delays.
