Dubai Firm Starts Okhta Testing

DUBAI — Arabtec Holding, the biggest construction company in the United Arab Emirates, started foundation testing in St. Petersburg on a 10 billion dirham ($2.72 billion) tower.

Arabtec signed a 50 million dirham contract with Gazprom to carry out foundation tests to build the Okhta Center, the company said in a statement Sunday. The next contract may be signed in November, while a third is expected by year-end.

These tests are necessary to obtain a permit to build the 400-meter Okhta Center, Arabtec said. Foundation testing contracts are “separate from the main contract,” which is estimated at 10 billion dirhams and was awarded in April 2008, according to the statement.

Gazprom on Sept. 22 won approval for the skyscraper, overcoming objections from local residents and UNESCO after the city’s governor gave Gazprom exemptions to zoning laws.
