Construction Frozen on 11 St. Pete Hotels

ST. PETERSBURG — Construction on 11 hotels planned for St. Petersburg has been put on hold because of the economic crisis.

The frozen hotels are at different stages of construction and would have provided at least 2,425 new rooms for St. Petersburg’s guests, the Real Estate Development and Research Agency said last week.

Overall, at least 37 hotel projects are planned for the city, comprising a total of 6,669 rooms, the agency reported.

By the end of July, the number of hotels under construction in the city increased by 26 percent compared with the same period last year. Most projects planned for St. Petersburg belong to the four-star category, but only 33 percent of those hotels are under construction.

As many as 55 percent of new hotels are under construction in the Admiralteisky and Central districts.

DTZ consulting said that occupancy rates in St. Petersburg hotels decreased by a third in the first four months of 2009 compared with the same period last year. The number of guests staying in hotels located in historic buildings and in the center of the city dropped by 36.5 percent, while guest numbers dropped by 28.8 percent in chain hotels and by 29.4 percent in midrange hotels.
