Children Get Ombudsman

President Dmitry Medvedev created the position of federal ombudsman for children’s rights on Tuesday, the first day of school, and appointed Alexei Golovan to the post, the Kremlin said.

“Creating such an institution complies with our international obligations and it’s very important that it’s happening on the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child,” Golovan, the former children’s ombudsman for Moscow, told Medvedev.

Medvedev called for the regions to appoint their own ombudsmen. Only 24 regions currently have children’s ombudsmen.
