Ukraine Says It Paid Gazprom for July

Ukraine paid Gazprom $605 million for gas supplied in July, easing concern that the country lacked funds and reducing the risk that shipments would be disrupted a second time this year, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said at a news conference Wednesday.

“Today, the government has paid for Russian gas to pump into Ukraine’s storage,” Tymoshenko said. “We will continue to pay for gas on time.”

Tymoshenko said the government used “money from the state budget” to make the payment. She also said Ukraine wants 27 billion cubic meters of gas in storage as of mid-October.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the World Bank and the European Investment Bank said Aug. 1 that they may lend the Ukrainian government $1.7 billion to increase the security of gas supplies from Russia to the European Union.

Naftogaz plans to purchase 3 billion cubic meters of gas a month in the third quarter, Naftogaz spokesman Valentyn Zemlyanskyi said July 28.
