Rosneft Kidnapping Suspect Killed

The prime suspect in the kidnapping of the son of Rosneft vice president Mikhail Stavsky earlier this year has been killed in a police operation in Ingushetia, Rosbalt news agency reported Tuesday.

Vitaly Chernobrovkin, 34, who was accused of organizing the abduction of the 17-year-old, also named Mikhail Stavsky, was killed together with two suspected rebels in the Ingush village of Kantyshevo on Aug. 6, the report said, citing a special services source.

Investigators say Chernobrovkin moved to the North Caucasus last year after serving a six-year prison sentence for illegal possession of firearms and explosives, and there he befriended Zarema Datayeva, who was detained in connection with the kidnapping on June 18, the day Mikhail Stavsky was freed.

Stavsky was kidnapped at a Moscow institute on April 13. The circumstances surrounding his release remain unclear.
