Kyrgyz Brush Off Uzbek Complaints

Kyrgyzstan on Wednesday rejected objections from Uzbekistan to the location of a new Russian military facility, saying the main threat to its security came from Uzbekistan.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also defended the facility, exposing a growing rift with some of its allies by responding to Uzbek criticisms. “[The facility] is of a defensive nature and is not directed against any other countries,” the Foreign Ministry said on its web site.

Kyrgyzstan this month gave the go-ahead for Russia to open a joint training facility on its territory and has suggested that it should be located near its southern border with Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan said the increased Russian military presence would destabilize the region.

“We specifically want the military base to be close to the border,” said Raimkul Attakurov, Kyrgyz ambassador to Moscow, Interfax reported. “All the evil comes from [that] direction.”
