Bicycle Bombs Kill 5 in Grozny

Suicide bombers on bicycles detonated explosives Friday in Grozny, killing four police officers and a civilian in coordinated attacks, officials said.

The suicide bombers approached police officers in two central locations in the Chechen capital and blew themselves up, killing two officers in each attack, Chechen Interior Minister Ruslan Alkhanov said in televised remarks. Three other people were wounded, the Emergency Situations Ministry said.

The use of bicycles represents a change of tactics for insurgents in the North Caucasus, who have been using cars and trucks or been on foot. Such attacks have happened in Afghanistan.

The Investigative Committee on Saturday identified one of the suspected bombers as Ilyas Batalov, an 18-year-old native of the village of Vedeno. It said Batalov had been living in Grozny but disappeared on June 7. His relatives had not contacted police about his disappearance, it said.

Investigators have determined that the other bomber was a male aged 20 to 25 but were still trying to identify him.

Friday’s attacks come at the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
