Police Must Pass Driving Tests

Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev on Wednesday ordered all personnel to pass driving tests again, in hopes that better behavior by police will cut down on the number of fatal traffic accidents.

The government has been stepping up its efforts to make the roads safer after a series of bus and car crashes left 32 people dead and about 60 injured over the past week. Early Wednesday, a bus with 28 people onboard flipped over on the federal Elista-Volgograd highway, killing a 22-year-old woman.

During a video conference with all the ministry’s departments, Nurgaliyev demanded that everyone pass driving tests again.

“I request that all the departments send in the required documents and carry out driving tests within a month,” he said.

He also said anyone who got behind the wheel drunk or on drugs was “already a criminal” and that police should seize their licenses on the spot.
