One Cargo Was Seized by Egypt

CAIRO, EGYPT -- Egypt seized one cargo of Russian wheat over allegations that the grain may be inedible, the state grain buyer said.

The public prosecutor Wednesday said it ordered the seizure of Russian wheat at ports and in storage nationwide. The action in fact related to a single 52,500-ton shipment, Nomani Nomani, deputy chairman of the General Authority for Supply Commodities, said by phone from Cairo on Thursday.

Egyptian authorities are also holding a ship carrying Russian wheat in the Red Sea until the results of samples are returned, the Middle East News Agency reported Thursday, citing an unidentified official from a silo company in the Red Sea port of Safaga.

Russia is yet to receive official notification from Egypt regarding the seizure of wheat, Alexei Alekseenko, a spokesman for Russia's food safety watchdog, said by phone from Moscow on Thursday.
