New Force in Chechnya

The number of federal servicemen in Chechnya will be halved and transformed into a new force tentatively called the "Committee for Maintaining Safety in the Region," Itar-Tass reported Wednesday.

The new force will be composed of servicemen from various enforcement agencies, including the Defense and Interior ministries, the report said.

It was unclear Wednesday who would head the Committee for Maintaining Safety in the Region.

Itar-Tass said the new force might start its work at the end of August or beginning of September.

The Kremlin announced April 16 that the counterterrorist operation in Chechnya was over.
