Military in Coal Scam

Several military officers have been charged with stealing at least 50 million rubles ($1.5 million) of budget money through a contract scam involving coal supplies, Defense Ministry investigators said, RIA-Novosti reported Tuesday.

The officers conspired with defunct contractors to obtain state contracts for coal supplies that never materialized, leading to heating shortages at military installations, it said. (Bloomberg)

Saakashvili to Rebuild Army

TBILISI, Georgia -- Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has vowed to rebuild his army after last year's war with Russia.

Speaking at a meeting in Tbilisi with U.S. General James Cartwright, vice chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Saakashvili said Monday that Georgia's forces have been trained for peacekeeping operations.

Georgia will continue building "modern, significantly higher quality, significantly stronger armed forces," Saakashvili said. (AP)
