New Director of Insurance Agency

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on Tuesday named State Duma Deputy Alexander Koval to head the Federal Service for Insurance Industry Supervision after its former chief left in March to join the president's expert council.

Koval chairs the Duma's subcommittee on insurance, and he is the longtime head of the All-Russia Union of Insurers. He will be required to step down from both posts once he takes the helm at the insurance market watchdog.

Speaking at a news conference, Koval said he would begin work at the watchdog Wednesday and that he would "continue the agenda" of Ilya Lomakin-Rumyantsev, who left the agency after five years.

"I can say categorically that our line of work in protecting the rights of the insured, as one of the main tasks of the agency, will be strengthened," he said, Interfax reported.
