Inflation Climbs to 5.6% on Eggs, Tea

Inflation through April 6 was 5.6 percent as egg and tea prices rose, the State Statistics Service said Wednesday.

Consumer prices climbed 0.2 percent between March 31 and April 6, compared with 5.3 percent last year during the same period. The cost of eggs climbed 1.6 percent, and black tea prices rose 0.8 percent, according to the statement. Gasoline prices fell 0.4 percent, and diesel fuel declined 1 percent.

Government officials say inflation will slow as the effect of the ruble's devaluation on import prices ebbs and consumer demand drops.

Inflation could be "significantly less" than the government's 13 percent forecast for the year, central bank First Deputy Chairman Andrei Ulyukayev said Wednesday. Inflation in the second quarter may be 3.9 percent, compared with 5.4 percent in the first three months of the year, the Economic Development Ministry said, Interfax reported.
