Festival Brings Paris Sound to Moscow

Cullyjazz.chJacky Terrasson will play Saturday.
The Le Jazz Festival is promising to showcase the finest of French jazz acts during two nights of lively music headlined by pianist Jacky Terrasson.

Terrasson, described by The New York Times Magazine as one of the young artists who is "most likely to change American culture over the next 30 years," will take the stage of MIR Concert Hall on Saturday, the second night of the festival.

Terrasson was raised in Paris and moved to the United States, graduating from the Berklee College of Music. After winning the prestigious Thelonius Monk Competition in 1993, he moved to the big stage and was soon signed to major jazz label Blue Note. Despite being an American-trained pianist, the style and mood of Terrasson's music remains distinctively French. He has even recorded two albums dedicated to Paris, "A Paris" and "Smile." Terrasson's playful improvisations and warm melodies make listeners feel like they are on a rooftop somewhere in Paris. In Moscow, Terrasson will perform with clarinetist Michel Portal, a renowned film music composer and three-time winner of the Cesar, the French Oscar.Stefano Di Battista, who will take to the stage after Terrasson, is an Italian-born saxophone player mainly associated with France, where he lives and has performed since the mid-1990s. Like Terrasson, Di Battista is signed to famous American jazz label Blue Note. Since 1997, Di Battista has toured both Europe and the United States and released a critically acclaimed album, "Round About Roma," a tribute to his hometown recorded with the Symphonic Orchestra of Paris. Other musicians to perform are African roots band Kora Jazz Trio and the David Reinhardt Quartet, led by the young but talented grandson of the legendary Django Reinhardt.

The Le Jazz Festival is organized by ArtMania with the support of the French Embassy in Moscow.
