Prosecutors Accused of Fabrications

A lawyer for one of the defendants on trial for the murder of investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya on Tuesday accused prosecutors of fabricating evidence.

In a colorful closing argument that lasted almost two hours, lawyer Murad Musayev said the prosecution had presented no credible evidence that his client, Dzhabrail Makhmudov, or the other two defendants were involved in Politkovskaya's 2006 slaying.

"The murder was committed by a group of professional killers who did not leave any traces," Musayev told the Moscow Military District Court.

Makhmudov's brother, Ibragim Makhmudov, also stands charged with involvement in the murder along with former Moscow police officer Sergei Khadzhikurbanov. All three defendants maintain their innocence.

Said Arsamirzayev, a lawyer for Ibragim Makhmudov, told the court in his closing argument Tuesday that a conviction would mean an end to the search for the actual people behind Politkovskaya's murder. "If those two boys are found guilty, the investigators will stop searching for the real organizers and killers," he said.
