Politkovskaya Suspect 'Pressured to Lie'

The suspected organizer of the 2006 murder of reporter Anna Politkovskaya claims investigators urged him to falsely incriminate either Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov or self-exiled businessman Boris Berezovsky, said a defense lawyer at the trial.

Sergei Khadzhikurbanov testified in a military court Thursday that he was offered a reduced sentence if he said Kadyrov or Berezovsky was the mastermind behind the killing, said lawyer Said Arsanazayev.

The two-month trial of three suspects accused of involvement in Politkovskaya's killing is thought to be nearing an end: Both prosecutors and defense lawyers have made their case, and the trial resumed this week after a short recess to allow final testimony.

Khadzhikurbanov, a former police officer who fought organized crime, is charged with murder along with two Chechen brothers, Dzhabrail and Ibragim Makhmudov. But none of the three are accused of pulling the trigger.
