News in Brief

Helicopter Crash Kills 3

A helicopter gunship crashed Tuesday morning, killing all three people aboard, a Defense Ministry spokesman said.

The Mi-24 "Hind" crashed in the Saratov region just before noon Tuesday, ministry spokesman Vladimir Drik said.

Investigators were trying to decipher the aircraft's black box flight recorders, Drik said in televised comments.

The helicopter was on a training flight from a Saratov region aircraft factory, news reports said.

The Mi-24 is similar to the Mi-8 -- a workhorse helicopter used widely in civilian and military aviation in the country.

Mi-8 crashes often occur and are blamed on poor maintenance and aging equipment. (AP)
