Belykh Names Liberal Activist as Adviser

The Moscow Times

Kirov Governor Nikita Belykh has appointed liberal activist Masha Gaidar, daughter of 1990s reforms architect Yegor Gaidar, as his adviser on social issues in the impoverished region.

Gaidar, a former activist with the pro-business Union of Right Forces, wrote on her LiveJournal blog that it would give her the chance "to make quality changes" in the social sphere.

Belykh, the former leader of SPS and a one-time outspoken Kremlin critic, was tapped by President Dmitry Medvedev in December to head up the Kirov region. His decision to accept the nomination has irked many in the opposition camp.

Belykh has said his decision to take the job does not mean that he has changed his ideological outlook and that he sees it as a chance to assist an economically distressed region.

Gaidar said her assignment was temporary and unpaid.
