Baturina Finally Cleared To Buy Chalet in Austria

Billionaire Yelena Baturina has finally been cleared to buy the Austrian chalet where she and her husband, Mayor Yury Luzhkov, have been regular vacationers for several years.

The property commissioner of Austria's state of Tyrol, Hermann Riedler, said Thursday that he would not use his right to veto the sale of the mansion in the posh skiing resort of KitzbЯhel.

"Enough evidence has been produced that the purchase is in the public interest," he told The Moscow Times by telephone from the regional capital, Innsbruck.

Riedler had thwarted Baturina's first attempt to buy the million-dollar property when he vetoed it last year, citing the fact that the buyer was a company registered in the Austrian capital, Vienna.

Now Baturina, who controls real estate developer Inteko, is buying the house personally, Riedler said.

Local law stipulates that non-EU residents wishing to buy property for personal use have to prove that they plan to live there permanently and demonstrate that the purchase is in the public interest.

Baturina has embarked on a high-level spending spree in KitzbЯhel, sponsoring a jazz festival and a private concert by singer Stevie Wonder and investing in a hotel and golf course project.

Her second attempt seemed in jeopardy last month when the village council of Aurach, where the mansion is located, said Baturina was welcome but her activities would not benefit the local community.

Yet KitzbЯhel town authorities subsequently declared the sale valid.
